Katharine is a Canadian artist based in Victoria, BC. Working primarily in acrylics, she brings a vibrant palette to her figurative paintings, which explore themes rooted in social theory. Her work examines the objectified gaze and social ritual, using gesture, pattern, and dress as modes of communication. Layers of expectation and memory are projected onto these interactions, suggesting that what is unsaid—or unseen—becomes the missing information. The virtue and vice in her tableaux lie not within the figures themselves, but in what surrounds them.
Katharine holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of British Columbia. She has been painting and drawing for over 25 years, with her recent return to Victoria reigniting her passion for the medium.
Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the Gage Gallery in Bastion Square (2022, 2023) and multiple juried shows. These include the Sooke Fine Art Show, with pieces such as The Blue Room (2022), Diamond Chair and the Boho Dress (2019), and Tea and the Lone Wolf Story (2020). At the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Show, her painting Social Theory, Diamond Chair received a Patron’s Award. Her piece Gaze was featured in the 2019 Sidney Fine Art Show. Katharine has also participated in the Hills to Shore Spring Tour and Fall Show, as well as the BC Cancer Foundation’s Jingle Mingle exhibition in Victoria.
